About Dr. Kalyani Gopal, PhD
Dr. Kalyani Gopal, PhD is an award-winning clinical psychologist, international trainer, and bestselling author whose work spans foster care, adoption, child sexual abuse, Autism Spectrum and neurodevelopmental disorders, and the fight against human trafficking. She began her doctoral studies at Vanderbilt University in Tennessee and earned her doctorate in clinical psychology from Alliant University in San Diego. She coined the term "Displacement Trauma" to name the complex harm caused by repeated breaks in a child's attachment bonds.
Dr. Kalyani Gopal, PhD built her career training an extraordinary range of people: foster and adoptive parents, judges, attorneys, FBI and Secret Service agents, police officers, firefighters, sheriffs, case managers, nonprofits, and governments across the United States and beyond. She has authored and co-authored several books, including The Supportive Foster Parent, Foster Parenting Step-by-Step, the grief workbook In My Heart, and the reparenting guide Strong Roots, Safe Wings. She also co-edited the Springer publication Sex Trafficking: Feminist and Transnational Perspectives and developed victim-identification tools used in Ukraine and Myanmar and a clinical training manual for practitioners in Mongolia.
Her path into this work was shaped early. Growing up in a military family, Dr. Gopal moved through many cities and schools, learning to listen closely and adapt quickly. That background pointed her naturally toward psychology. A single moment, years into her clinical career, shifted her focus permanently. A young girl she had been treating called her late one night from a payphone in Chicago. Dr. Gopal told her to go home, assuming a dispute with her foster family. The girl was never heard from again. That decision has stayed with her ever since and drove her from clinic-based foster care work into the direct fight against exploitation and trafficking. Her patients, too, have been teachers. She credits their grit and determination with shaping the deep respect and sense of responsibility she brings to every case.
Dr. Kalyani Gopal, PhD founded SAFE Coalition for Human Rights in 2014 and has chaired the Global SAFE Conferences in Chicago and Washington, DC, with SAFE 2027 planned for India. She serves as President of Mid-America Psychological and Counseling Services, PC, overseeing six mental health clinics in Indiana and Illinois, and sits on the Indiana Lake County Child Protection Team and Child Fatality Team boards. Since August 2024, she has served as President of the Psychology Coalition at the United Nations, the first Asian American to hold that office, and was re-elected to a second two-year term. Her honors include the 2019 Top 20 Global Women of Excellence United States Congressional Medal of Honor, the 2023 APA Presidential Citation Award for Human Rights and Global Leadership, and the 2024 Indiana Commission for Women's Trailblazer Award. Away from her work, she reads, gardens, travels, and spends time with her adult children and her dogs. She defines success simply: a peaceful sense of personal fulfillment, and watching women and children move from victimhood to purpose-driven lives.
